Interpersonal Struggle on Animal Agri-business
As a student of Animal Science, part of our field of study is animal agribusiness like swine, cattle and dairy productions. In line with this, I have had an interpersonal struggle whether or not to include it in my course as I have personal issues on animal agri-business when it comes to its health impacts to human beings. I’ve seen animal concentrations camps for the purpose of beef production. I have seen poultry farms where chicken are kept in the dark and fed with feeds alone to grow faster than normal. I was always imagining how these kinds of food production affect the food chain. On the other hand, I was thinking that if I will just delist it in my course, then nothing will happen as there will be nobody to challenge the idea of mass production of animals for the sake of profit not for food.
I decided to do a research on animal agribusiness and found out that the business is monopolized by few corporations that are only interested of amassing more profit rather than producing more food for the growing number of people. After that, I did my research on alternative ways for animal agribusiness that is friendly with nature and with human health. I found out that there are already small business groups that are managing their animal agribusiness in the open. They are raising cattle, swine and chicken in the free-range. They are groups resisting the corporate control of the food production and are producing for food and not much for profit. Part of their business is information drives on healthy animal production. At that moment, I became more interested on pursuing my course and learn more about animal agribusiness. I decided to include it in my course hoping to learn more about the alternative ways for food production and to somehow push my advocacy in healthy animal production.
In this field of study, I know that I have strengths in research especially when it comes to documenting experiences in animal science that are alternative and are not profit-driven as it is my passion to be able to provide healthy source of food for the people. Moreover, I have the patience to explain and encourage my colleagues in this field to adopt the alternatives to corporate agribusiness. However, I have the weakness of trying to understand the side of profit-driven agribusiness. My bias for the alternative sometimes clouds my reasoning. But as long as I know that I am on the right tract, I will assert my cause. I am however expecting debates with regards this issue but I am positive that I can push it having evidences that there is hope for alternative source of food other than those sold from the corporate animal agribusiness.
