When we read works of the famous Muslim scholars, we find out that the treatment of women was one of the main subjects of Muhammad’s injunctions. He did whatever it took to promote the position of women. In the Arab society where polygamy was well-established practice, the possible number of wives was limited to four. Moreover, the Quran also states that each wife should be treated equally and kept in prosperity by the man. Muhammad himself opposed polygamy and tried to abolish it. But it was deeply-rooted among the Arabs and partly was a necessity of those times.
Muhammad forbade concubinage and sexual slavery. Any trafficking in human beings for any purpose was abolished. The practice of infant daughters’ murder by their fathers was forbidden by the Quran and that one who dared do this would face the most severe punishment. Women were entitled to inherit property from their fathers. The major part of the Muhammad’s reform was devoted to question of women’s clothing and attitude.
In my opinion, this article proves that the issue of gender equality exists for a very long time already. The Quran aimed at granting this equality. Both sexes must be treated equally in every sphere except physical strength and possession of wealth. Muhammad tried to improve the position of women in the society. His mission was to help men and women enjoy their family life. No seclusion of women was allowed. Instead women must be respected and honored. In their turn, they were obliged to observe some rules and commandments. To my mind, Islamic tradition granted higher level of liberty and civilization for women long before the westerns did in response to feminist movements.
