The paper “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” refers to language as a part of people’s culture and identity. The language that the authors of the paper refer to is a combination of Mexican Spanish and American English, but can be applied to any language in the world. The language of non-native Americans who incorporate their culture into the American language and wise verse. Through language, people manage to preserve and maintain their identity and they use it as a reminder of their culture.
Every language is a living matter and it is liable to changes, adapting to new regulations and situations. Based on the paper, it may be noticed that there are many versions of Mexican Spanish that developed in the USA depending on the territory on their settlers. For example, Mexicans in Arizona, speak different version of Spanish from the ones in Texas. The language took a little from English and a little from Mexican Spanish creating a variant that can be understood only by ones who live in that region and who are of the same origin. This phenomenon depicts that strength of imagination and creativity that people have in general.
In addition to this, the text vividly describes the intention to root out the strong urge to speak a native language. Language as an indispensible part of every culture is a reminder of someone's homeland and as such carries a strong emotional tone. Language can be defined as a socially structured pattern of sound symbols with specific meanings. It is the most important component of human culture. The intention to force someone to stop speaking the mother tongue only invokes a stronger desire to do the opposite. America, as the land of immigrants, should be proud of the wealth of languages that exist in this country and should keep them from oblivion. English, a language that spreads over every continent is richer because it is spoken is so many different variations. Every language has some words of foreign origin. One may not know perfectly historical data, but based on the words that prevail in that language, a linguist may recognize what are the cultures that ruled in the past. For example, English language is rich in words of Roman and French origin and these words stand as monuments of periods where Roman Empire and Normans ruled in England at some point. To force someone to stop speaking its native language is equally to making him to renouncing his identity.
On the other hand, the ones who live in a country where another language is the official language should try to learn the best they can the language of their host country. One should not expect to be understood if he does not learn the official language. I agree with the author of the paper that native language should be nurtured and saved, but the host language; in this case English should be learned as well. In this way, the process of assimilation is much easier and when a foreigner breaks the language barrier, a vast number of opportunities open.
