According to shariati, the modern calamities that are leading to decline of humanity can be placed in two headings; social systems and intellectual systems. Both systems regard man as an economic animal that worships consumption rather than the God who created him. “There is no longer leisure to growth in human values, moral greatness and spiritual aptitudes, but working to consume” (Shariati, 1980).
In the communist society we find a similar decline in human moral values although they have respect to social behavior and individual outlook. Democracy and western liberalization have created an arena for profit-hungry forces transforming a man to a more economic and consuming animal.
Ideological calamities also negate the concept of man as primary being. Under ideologies we have historism that lead to materialistic deterministic, biologism which assigns procedures to the laws of nature and sociologism which views man as a vegetable growing in the garden which needs proper climate and soil.
Therefore, the world is standing on the frontier between two eras-one where both Western civilization and communist ideology have failed to liberate humanity. Instead it has drawn it into disaster. Causing the new spirit to recoil in disillusion; where humanity in search of deliverance will try a new road or new direction that will liberate its essential nature over this dark and dispirited world. Islam will play a major role in this new life and reconstruction. The calamity that is faced by human today is a human calamity as result of distancing himself from true religion.
