Introduction
In the book under review, the author by the name Michael Foucault makes a brief introduction which comprises of Barbin memoirs. These memoirs had been composed in the French language back in the 19th century. As such, the author translated them from the French to the English language.
Ways in Which the Barbin Story Could not happen in 21st Century
If Barbin lived in the 21st century here in America, there various ways in which her story could not have unfolded the way it did. First, the judge could not have been forced by the judge to transform from the female to male. In this regard, the judge at that time made a directive which contravened the rights of choice. In the present America, it would be difficult to make such a directive dictating the choice that one should make rather than leaving him or her to decide personally. In addition, there could have been a very low possibility for Barbin to commit suicide. In the present society, since Barbin could have been allowed to make a free choice, it would have been easy to transform to being a male.
Possible Happenings to Barbin in Contemporary Society
In the present America, Barbin would have been allowed to make a personal choice willingly rather than being forced to transform into a male. This is based on the fact that America has developed substantially in regard to its legal framework. As a result, Barbin would not have possibly committed suicide.
Status of happiness and Difficulties Even in the Contemporary Society
Indeed, Barbin would have lived a happier life based on the fact that the court would have allowed a freely-made individual choice rather than a forced one. However, although Barbin would not have been forced to make a pre-determined decision, she would still find it lightly difficult during transformation from hermaphroditism to a masculine gender. This would be due to the fact that even in the contemporary society people with normal sexual orientation do not essentially interact with hermaphrodites freely and jubilantly. However, it could have gone to a level of necessitating suicide.
