Introduction: Bureaucratic Organizations
Bureaucracy is a ubiquitous reality in postmodern society. Public and private institutions encompass this type of administrative framework that enables them to function effectively and efficiently but not without various issues, of course. The European Union (EU) is one such case of a bureaucratic organization that consists of a multitude of corporate divisions with a plethora of diverse talent, which must be managed and coached properly. The article I selected for this assignment is simply titled “Bureaucracy” by Bert Rockman, and it was published in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Purpose of Bureaucracy
The purpose of this article was to provide a conceptual overview of bureaucracy by digging into its core competencies as well as its shortcomings/stereotypes. Characteristics and paradoxes of bureaucracy are discusses along with bureaucracy and the state. Finally, the article ends with a description of trends in bureaucratic organizations. Thus, the reader will glean a moderate insight into the protocol and philosophy of bureaucracy with relevant examples of this system from both the developed and developing world.
Synopsis on Bureaucracy
Rockman (2013) defines bureaucracy as “a specific form of organization defined by complexity, division of labor, permanence, professional management, hierarchical coordination and control, strict chain of command, and legal authority.” It is distinguished from more informal and collegial organizations. Bureaucratic organizations thrive on law and order, rigorous control of resources, clearly highlighted roles and responsibilities, professionalization, and a commitment to tradition and routine. Without these attributes all working together harmoniously to establish the desired objective, bureaucracy would be rendered futile. Government is a feasible exemplar of bureaucracy of which it takes much man and woman power and resources to keep in check.
Personal Utility of Bureaucracy
What I found to be useful about this article is the various amounts of advantages and disadvantages of bureaucracy. While on one hand bureaucracy is good in organizations because it advocates for uniform communication and consistency on organizational goals and objectives along with strategic plans. Everyone is on the same page, thereby knowing which role they must play in order to accomplish the collective aim. On the other hand, this can create issues for doing things in new, interesting and breakthrough ways that could sharpen an institution’s competitive edge, particularly in business. But it’s typical for business to embrace bureaucracy because of the transactional costs that are reduced as a result. This article really helped me to better understand the intrinsic fabric of the EU, the prominent organization where I happen to be employed.
