The association has about 15800 inhabitants to the south of Ankara, in Turkey. It is a highly successful association with an ever increasing membership and high social activity records. It does not involve government cost in the provision of services to the residents. It has improved education levels of the disadvantaged inhabitants and has an annual budget of about 30,000 Turkish liras. The revenue comes from membership contributions, income from its activities, donations, and sales of recycling. The association faces operational challenges both economic and social problems.
Economic challenges
In its operations, the organization has experienced several financial problems. It lacks adequate infrastructure to carry out its activities. Poor road networks are a big blow to the association’s transport. To solve the problem, the association will have to improve road networks and construct sidewalks. Electricity is also an economic challenge to the union. The association should explore alternative energy sources like solar and wind energy to produce power.
In addition, lack of enough management personnel is a significant economic challenge to the association. The management sets a small budget for staffing whereas the association has many resources. It should set a budget that accommodates all financial problems involving the union. These problems can be solved by engaging in revenue generating activities like crop production. Money collected should develop infrastructural systems and help in electricity generation. In addition, the alternative power produced from the suggested solar and wind energy, will generate revenue to the association. Moreover, it should educate members on the proper use of power to avoid wastage of electric energy. The association should also employ qualified management personnel with adequate management knowledge.
Social challenges
These are the interpersonal challenges that affect social settings of people. Lack of community centers where members can meet to discuss various issues is a social problem as it blocks the way for interactions. Building community centers is the appropriate solution. The workers also face social challenges when on duty. For example, the librarian complains about insufficient space for carrying out her work. Leasing of cheap office space is the appropriate solution to this problem.
In addition, the association faces educational problems. The library is small and contains a limited number of books. The association should lease library space just like in the case of the offices. Constructing a bigger new library is a probable solution to this problem. The organization should request the local authority to issue them with public land. In addition, the organization contains poorly developed classrooms that need improvement. It should hire or build better classes. It also lack trained teachers to offer quality services. It should look for more well trained teachers. They can do this by encouraging members who have experience in teaching to participate fully and efficiently. They can also request for foreign support as the willing countries may help them with teachers. Another problem is that the curricula offered by the association is not recognized by the ministry of education hence cannot receive government funding. The curricula provide courses tailored to the needs of local people therefore not in line with the Ministry criteria. Dialogue with the government could provide mutual understanding to the advantage of the local community. Government can be requested to fund these students and the ministry to recognize them. In addition, lack of water systems is a great blow to the Association. Alternative sources of water like drilling and piping should be explored to solve the problem.
In conclusion, the Cigdemim neighborhood association portrays how an association can achieve in service provision to the society without governmental funding. The association has achieved several milestones in this area. It has made the lives of local people better.
