Before Ellen Lang decided to ask for help of private detective Elvis Cole, she was contemplating about many things that could have happened to her husband and her son Petry. Mr. Lang was a man who lived two lives. In one life, he was a husband and a father, and in the separated life he had a mistress. This is why Ellen Lang hesitated to turn to private detective.
Ellen thought that her husband got into financial problems because he left the talent agency and opened his own agency. She thought that he was giving a lot of money to his mistress and when he did not have any money, he turned to the borrowing money from the mafia. Even though Ellen did not know a lot about her husband affairs, she was aware that something was happening in his life. As Mr. Lang's mistress was a woman that had high demands and liked to carry expensive things, her husband piled up a big debt. He had no one to turn to. Her guess was that on the day when Mr. Lane went to take their son from school, someone ambushed him and their son into a van. It was mafia. They asked Mr. Lange for money but he said that he was broke. Then they said that they will keep him in a remote cabin until his wife found the money that he owned and only then they would let him and his son free.
Ellen Lang waited so long to contact detective agency because she hoped that it was all her imagination and that her husband and son would return home after one day. The quote that suggests this is: "Only this past Friday they never come home. I tried all weekend to find Mort" (Crais 4).
