Climate change affects natural climate systems and patterns. Consequently, these changes contribute to the vulnerability of peoples. Climate change bring about vulnerabilities to the entire ecosystem. Changes in natural climate systems, for instance, bring about rising sea levels due to continuous melting of the polar ice caps and shrinking of glaciers. Consequently, this phenomenon affects the marine life ecosystem. In the same way, climate change also brings about human vulnerabilities – both directly and indirectly. An example of a direct vulnerability is the susceptibility of people to diseases due to climate change. On the other hand, an example of an indirect vulnerability is the inadequacy of food supply, which is essential to human survival.
One of the most problematic impact of climate change that leads to human vulnerabilities is on global food supply. Climate change that prolongs and intensifies drought, for instance, would more likely reduce food supply and reduce sustainability within this context. Other human vulnerabilities include the likelihood that climate change facilitates the spread of infectious and vector-borne diseases. As a result, the human population becomes vulnerable to diseases, particularly new diseases without existing medicine, drug or vaccines. Overall, climate change leads to human vulnerabilities because it threatens food security around the world, it facilitates the proliferation of diseases as well as the formation of or mutation to new diseases that are difficult to cure, and affects other parts of the ecosystem that contribute to human survival.
Human vulnerabilities are region-specific because the degree of the impact of climate change in various regions differ. Climate change, for instance, may significantly affect agriculture production in most areas compared to others. Furthermore, scientists are unable to predict the pattern of change that would be brought about the changes in the natural climate systems. For this reason, the measures and mechanisms to combat climate change may also differ for each region depending on the current, existing, or upcoming impact of this change.
