Working as a pharmacist in a hospital, I am very familiar with doctors prescribing patients with brand name medications. They provide prescriptions to the patient’s parents misinforming them that the prescription is covered by insurance and that the pharmacy will eventually dispense the needed medicines. When parents present prescriptions at the pharmacy, they are often surprised and annoyed because the medicines are not covered by insurance and the pharmacy is unable to dispense them. This unethical conduct is very detrimental not just to the doctor who released the prescription but also to the entire medical facility (Palmieri and Stern 165). Doctors should observe strict ethical standards especially when giving information to patients and their parents or guardians. It is a serious ethical deviance to make someone believe into something that is not true – something that will taint the credibility and integrity of the prescribing physician.
In connection thereof, I propose that all medical facilities must impose a policy that would prohibit physicians from providing false, inaccurate, and misleading information to their patients and to their parents or guardians. Patients or parents who may experience such acts should be given access to a customer care section in a hospital wherein they can file for a complaint. If complaint is proven, the physician who misinformed the patients or the parents will be suspended for 1 month for first violation; suspension of up to 3 months for second offense; and a recommendation to cancel license to practice medicine for third offense.
