Executive Summary
Which content and assignments in this course most helped you better understand the roles of leadership and followership within your organization (or one with which you are familiar), and what impact have they had, or do you anticipate they will have, on the value you will bring to your role within an organization?
One of the lessons learned from one of the readings is that to be an effective and influential leader, the experience with subordinates should be on a one-on-one basis . From previous readings of organizational experiences, for instance from GE which was successfully led by Jack Welch, stories have been documented regarding Welch’s direct leadership style. He was noted to have exhibited leadership skills through directly communicating to various personnel from different ranks of the organizational hierarchy. The experience of communicating directly with subordinates enhances leaders’ abilities to discern challenging situations from the perspectives of the workers. As emphasized, “authentic leaders have good, sometimes excellent, situation sensing capabilities” . The impact of developing situation sensing capabilities through one-on-one interpersonal relationship with subordinates would significantly assist in addressing urgent concerns including helping in conflict resolution or problem-solving in one’s capacity as a leader in current and future organizations.
How have the content and assignments changed the way you think about leadership and followership and the way you will practice these skills?
The lessons learned from the content and assignments changed one’s perception about leadership in general in terms of emphasizing the need to accurately evaluate subordinates’ needs and demands as a first step to facilitating the achievement of goals. As revealed, to bridge gaps between and among people, “gaining an awareness of those differences equips you with areas to focus on to better relate to colleagues” .
How have the content and assignments shaped your goals?
The content and assignments enabled appreciating the fact the leadership skills evolve and should further be developed and improved through learning new insights in best practices and applications of leadership theories (Kegan & Lahey, 2010; Coleman, Gulati, & Segovia, 2012a). As such, one of my personal and professional goals would be to seek further avenues for developing leadership skills which would be needed to address challenging issues in current and future organizational settings.
