Questions
The retrenchment strategy could affect both of City Hospital’s objectives. If City Hospital closed its pediatrics department the range of services and residencies offered by the institution would be reduced. If another hospital was chosen to close its pediatric unit than City Hospital’s objects would be favorably affected by improving the hospitals capacity, quality of services and learning opportunities.

Are there other strategies that can be considered by City hospital?
Other strategies City Hospital can be considering include downsizing their pediatrics department, specializing the pediatrics department or creating a multi service pediatric department. The hospital could downsize the department by 50%. The hospital could specialize the department to cater towards pediatric cancer or developmental disabilities for example. The hospital could offer a wider range of health services for young patients such as dentistry, optometrists and a family doctor.
Argue against the closure.
Closing the pediatrics department would limit the variety of services provided by the hospital. Children would need to travel to the next hospital for health care. Families of sick young children may need to travel further to visit their sick children. Also, learning opportunities for resident physicians would be reduced. New doctors looking to gain experience would be left looking elsewhere for opportunities to gain experience in pediatrics.
Argue for the closure.
The closure of the pediatric department would reduce lost revenue and would allow the hospital to repurpose those beds to provide health care for other patients who are currently under serviced. Opening up the reserved empty beds would ensure that more patients would receive the quality health care they need.
