Faith is a very important aspect in any Christian’s life. It is having trust that is not founded on any proof whatsoever. It is the cornerstone of purpose and perseverance in a believer’s life and through it; Christians do believe that they indeed please God. Consequently, all their supplications are satisfactorily answered. It is, therefore, worth understanding what Faith is and what it means. Although it has been defined widely and differently by different people, this paper seeks to discuss the definitions of Faith as elaborated by Lewis and his position as regards Reason.
According to Lewis, Christians have understood and appreciated Faith as Belief which is the recognition and acceptance of the validity of Christian teachings. A person who has faith is in fact seen as one who conforms to a standard moral. This is actually what makes Faith to be perceived as a virtue.
Lewis further states that in order to comprehend the full worth of Faith, one has to reflect about Humility which refers to a quality of being polite and meek. He clearly states that for any Christian to realize this quality, he or she has to first acknowledge that human beings may have an exaggerated opinion of their importance; that they are proud, so to speak. They also have to make an effort of seriously practicing the Christian teachings. This, however, is not easy as Christians always fall into temptations. Lewis feels that if only Christians could devote themselves and appreciate that God them the power of thinking, they would trust in him and do all what he says. Faith goes hand in hand with good deeds.
Faith is based on reason in Lewis’ opinion. He believes that a person holding on anything that his reason has accepted is faith. In this regard, once a person has reasoned and accepted Christianity, it must be constantly fed into him through daily prayers and religious readings.
Based on Lewis discussion, I realize that Faith is a virtue. In my opinion, faith entails believing without seeing. It is not in any way intertwined with reason. A person need not reason on any set of facts if he has faith. The acceptance of what is stated as true with no doubt whatsoever is true faith. Reason is in fact informed by a person’s conviction towards or about something.
