Development of information systems: the role of open solutions

The centrality of open solutions in the historical development information systems cannot be gainsaid. Modern healthcare systems require efficient, updated and cost friendly information systems to replace the conventional system that is characterized by manual documentation and retrieval of patient information (Wan 4). Open solutions helps to install information systems. It seeks to ensure a healthcare system that is patient centered and customer focused through a secure and private Electronic Health Record (EHR). The consequence of enhanced information systems is a coordinated medical practice that utilizes digital technologies in the delivery of healthcare systems. Open solutions makes it possible to communicate and share information (Medical informatics, 10). Such sharing of information is done in a manner that is transportable and interoperable via macroeconomic and large scale information technology systems.

The value open solutions in the future

Open solutions will transform health and medical culture. It will achieve this goal through processes, technologies and leadership systems that can enhance safe and high quality healthcare. Open solutions will offer working and viable alternative for the providers of healthcare. It will assist in the implementation of clinical and healthcare informatics. In so doing, open solutions will reduce the cost of clinical healthcare informatics and improve the quality of healthcare using information technology (Medical informatics, 25). In addition, open solutions will connect both open and closed IT systems to ensure low-cost operations systems that will improve health outcomes.

Explaining the limited success of open solutions in healthcare information systems

Implementation of open solutions has had limited success because due to challenges such as technical limitations, attitudinal constraints, cost implications as well as standardization limits (Dienemann & Barbara, 5561). Other issues that have been raised include the ability of open solutions to secure privacy and confidentiality in healthcare information systems. The technical constraints include lack of highly trained personnel to maintain the information systems. Organizations shy away from implementing open solutions.
