Software piracy refers the Act of copying software without authorization from the publisher. In accordance to the end-user agreement, particular software is intended for a specific use, thus giving or selling copies to other persons constitutes to piracy. Software privacy is a common problem worldwide, which has been of harm to software producers accounting to loss of funds (Limayem, Khalifa, and Chin 13). Piracy is a topic of great controversy particularly in relation to the idea of information technology management. Although piracy has proved hard to eliminate, organizations should put up measures to deal with this menace
Initially, organizations should provide product identification keys for each product. These product identity keys should be unique to each serial number of the device. In this case, organizations will ensure that only those who buy the software install it in accordance with the end user license (Haruvy, Mahajan, and Prasad 34). Besides, this method should be easy to use for those who have obtained the software legally.
In addition, organization should develop labels and logos unique to their soft-wares. This is mainly designed to prevent prospective customers from buying pirated software. To promote the effective use of this method, organizations should do massive campaigns to ensure that customers are acquainted with the original label and logos of the software. In addition, these organizations should educate the users on the advantages of using original software as they prevent loss of data and data sharing with third parties (Haruvy, Mahajan, and Prasad 14). For instance, Microsoft educates consumers of its products about using the pirated software
Finally, organizations should collaborate with law enforcing agencies to fight piracy. In this, they rely on the fact that piracy is illegal to look for the culprits of piracy. They should also provide avenues for their customers to report the cases of piracy as an important step to fighting piracy
In this war, some organizations have demonstrated better ways of dealing with this problem than others have. Giant software producers like Microsoft owing to their large market share and vulnerability, have huge investments to curb piracy. Due to their fast knowledge and experience in the field, these have collaborated with law enforcement agencies like federal bureau of investigations to help in this fight (Holsapple et al. 12). These anti-piracy campaigning have made them ahead of other small-scale produces. Furthermore, these campaigns have promoted the use of their products and shown to their consumers why they should use original soft-wares.
In conclusion, software piracy is menace in information technology. As measures to solve this, organizations need to evaluate the possibility of involving the consumer. Whatever the method the organization uses to eradicate piracy, the producer needs to educate the consumer that those methods are to protect the consumer. Piracy is a problem for both the producer and consumer; therefore, this war should equally involve both of them.
