Problem Statement
This is a proposal to design an automatic door opener prototype. The door will be controlled by an IR sensor circuit programmed with open and close door functions. The automatic door opener will be connected to a power supply which will operate the door opening and closing mechanism. The operation principle of the door opener is that it will sense an oncoming object such as a human; it will then open the door wide enough for the objet to go through the door. The door will remain open until there is no object within the door opener’s operation radius at which time it will close the door.
Customer Requirements
The customer requires a device which will actuate the door opening when an approaching person is three feet away. The IR sensor will sense the approaching person and engage an electric motor coupled to the door. The operation of the electric motor should be such that the person using the door should not pause or break pace waiting for the door to open. The door opener should be designed for indoor use with provisions for outdoor use upgrade such as weather-proof packaging. The door opener should be equipped with LED indicators for states of operation such as idle and engaged. Finally, the device should operate silently and smoothly with the option of drawing power from wall outlets.
Product Summary
The system will use a distance (RF) sensor to detect oncoming human traffic. Once triggered, the system will give a signal to the traffic to stop through LEDs mounted on the door. This will allow enough time to close the door. The system will then simultaneously open the door while still signaling oncoming traffic to remain stationary.
Specifications
The automatic door opener system has five electrical components and a total of 14 I/O pins connected to the microprocessor and a power supply. The system’s components are connected by two 2 I/O buses, one bus connected to the H-Bridge while the other is connected to the other electrical components. The door opener also has a data port and two cords, a 12V green coloured supply cord and a white coloured common ground cord. The motor is intrinsically couple to the door opener circuitry and as such requires no setup. Only four of the eight data pins on the automatic door opener are utilised and their functions and destination ports on the microprocessor are as follows:
The electronic components are all connected to the 14 port bus and the configuration of the pins is as follows:
A note on the RF sensor:
The RF sensor senses objects directly in front of the sensor lenses within a range of 0.05m to 1m away. This range decreases when an object is off centred from the lens. The software which controls the system is optimized to detect objects aligned perpendicularly to the center of the bridge and moving directly towards it.
