A Growing Epidemic

Introduction:
Endometriosis is a disease of the reproductive system in which endometrial tissue implants in various parts of the reproductive system and replicates itself causing most often estrogen dominance. The effects of endometriosis are widespread: chronic pain, painful and severe periods, infertility issues, susceptibility to various cancers, and much more. The most pressing issue regarding endometriosis is, however, how unknown this disease still is and what, if anything, can be done to help those women who suffer from the disease.

Discussion:

This project will focus on this unknown disease in an effort to spread awareness to both the medical community and to sufferers who might feel alone and without hope. I will first tackle the physiology of the disease in hopes to lend some insight as to what causes this chronic disease and what can be done based on that understanding. Furthermore, I will discuss the forms of treatment for the disease. At the moment, there are various forms of treatment but no cure. These treatments vary from birth control pills and IUDs to invasive surgery. Outside of the traditional medical field, treatments consist of acupuncture and chiropractic care, various supplements that treat the disease from numerous angles, topical creams and such that work to rebalance the hormones, and diet regiment. After spreading awareness about this largely unknown disease and analyzing the various treatments, I will posit that the most effective form of treatment is, in fact, the supplements and the proper diet. I will focus on three specific supplements: Serrapeptase, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and trimethylglycine (TMG). I will explain the uses of these supplements and how they affect the body of endometriosis sufferers. Finally, I will expand on the key factors of an endometriosis-friendly diet and explain how the diet limits inflammation which is one of the key factors in combating the symptoms of the disease. All in all, the best treatment is one of collaboration between doctors and alternative medicine practitioners because the disease is still largely misunderstood. Through collaboration more can be gained in terms of understanding and effective treatment.

Conclusion:

Endometriosis is a growing epidemic, and the more we understand about the disease, the better we can contend with it. Awareness is key as well as an understanding of the available treatments, especially since some of the most effective treatments are alternative and not widely practiced by traditional doctors. This project is an effort to bring those alternative methods into the conversation with traditional medical doctors. Only through understanding the mechanisms of the disease can we understand how to address the disease, and in modern medicine, there are still a lot of unknowns. That being the case, it is time to join forces with alternative medicine. This paper aims to fuse the benefits of both modern medicine and new alternatives. Endometriosis can decrease the quality of life tremendously, but it is often a disease of taboo because it concerns the female reproductive system and people don’t talk about it enough. Also, many sufferers don’t “appear” to show symptoms, so they often get ostracized and accused of not being able to handle monthly periods. This is all wrong, and this essay aims to remedy these misunderstandings while offering some hope to those sufferers who might feel at the end of the line.
