Impact Statement
Summary
Molinari’s article focuses on changes made by engineers in the environment. The article demonstrated how Engineers play a significant role in the society when it comes to solving problems affecting people in the community. The author claimed that daily challenges faced by people made engineers come up with excellent solutions. In the article, Engineering students seek ways of providing an adequate supply of water to the growing population. Additionally, they brainstorm on how natural methods could be used to get rid of toxic pollutants in harbors without causing any harm to animals living in the water. Finally, the students seek ways of finding sustainable sources of energy other than fossil fuels (Molinari, 2015).
On the other hand, the article shows that teamwork is essential to achieving various Engineering dreams. According to Molinari (2015), the university knowledge alone cannot achieve any outcome but Engineers need to work as a team to solve problems.
How the article changes the reader’s perspectives?
The following article has a lot of significance to an Engineering student and a practicing Engineer too. Firstly, the article motivates a person to study hard and deep in order to get solutions to problems affecting people in the society. It changes the perception that only experienced Engineers can make changes in the society. Secondly, the article shows the importance of teamwork. As an engineer, I have hopes of starting my Engineering firm and start designing materials alone. The article changes my mind and that of other engineers aiming at achieving goals individually. Team work works best in Engineering (Molinari, 2015).
Influence of the article to the career
The article influences the student’s choice of a career in different ways. As a computer engineer, the article stresses on studying to find solutions to major problems associated with automobile fossil fuels and sustainable energy. The Engineers becomes more passionate into completing their studies while at the same time engaging in projects aimed at exercising their knowledge as engineers.
Will self-drive cars crash the insurance industry by Willie Jones-IEEE SPECTRUM
Summary
Jones was concerned about the welfare and safety of the current engineering innovations when writing the article. Insurance companies are actively involved in insuring vehicles as soon as they leave the manufacturer. According to Jones (2015), insurance companies do not take into consideration the functionality of self-driving cars in the real world. According to some insurers, using robots in driving cars would be safer that using human beings. Additionally, the article focuses on the issue of people and accepting technology. People will take the extra long time to accept that they can be carried by a self-driven car (Jones, 2015). The issue of safety takes center stage in the debate because the author worries how human-drive cars will thrive in the same road as self-drive cars.
How the article changes the reader’s perspectives?
The article creates a different view of engineering innovations. It shows that Engineers are very precise and accurate while designing robotics and people should not be scared to testing new engineering products. On the other hand, the article makes the reader develop many questions regarding the usability of self-drive cars in normal roads used by human-driven vehicles. Did the designer consider the safety of other road users? Finally, the article changes the reader’s perception towards insurers. Insurance organizations no longer care about the safety of people as long as self-drive car owners pay their annual premiums.
Influence of the article to the career
Jones article has a lot of influence on both mechanical and electrical engineering careers. For computer engineers, the article shows that some areas have not been investigated, and they should study hard to get a solution to those problems. Safety measures put in self-drive cars do not meet the standard requirements and more innovations towards improving safety are needed from computer engineers. The article encourages students in electrical engineering to design electrical systems that will automatically make the self-drive car function properly and avoid causing accidents with other motorists.
In-vehicle electric control systems using intelligent power modules by Matt Tyler from EE Times
Summary
Tyler was concerned about making vehicle manufacturing and usage more economical by utilizing engineering innovations. Computer engineers under the automobile industry have for long tried to design vehicles that are more economical in terms of the cost of maintenances and fuel cost. The in-vehicle electric control system uses intelligent power modules to reduce the number of motors used in a car. According to Tyler (2015), the following technology aims at reducing the number of motors used in vehicles by 200 per car. Reducing the number of motors leads to a reduction in size, and weight of the vehicle leading to a significant reduction in the cost of maintenance. However, the author argues that the cost of producing the car might be higher than normal due to new technologies and high-class gadgets introduced.
How the article changes the reader’s perspectives?
The discussion by Tyler reveals that advancement in technology reduces the cost of living in the society. In contrast to many beliefs that technology is expensive, the article proves that practicing technology is the most economical way of reducing the cost of living. The in-vehicle electrical control system reduces the size and weight of a car. Additionally, elimination of many motors minimizes many checkups by electrical engineers, hence, reducing the cost of maintenance.
Influence of the article to the career
Understanding Tyler’s article makes electrical engineers realize that engineers are still innovating new products and gadgets. The article motivates the engineer to work hard and design gadgets that are economical and efficient. Additionally, the information given in the article reveals that engineers have a chance to shine in the world because they control approximately every aspect of the human life. Computer engineers are also challenged to produce programs for operating such vehicles to ensure they work efficiently and reliably.
2015's Top Ten Tech Cars: Formula E Spark-Renault SRT_01E by Lawrence Ulrich-IEEE Spectrum
Summary
Ulrich’s article demonstrated the relationship between engineering, technology, and sports. The author claimed that efficient battery, better electrical vehicle, and fuel efficiency made a good sports car. Formula E cars use a lot of electrical and computer engineering designs and programs to manufacture. The car uses various aerodynamics and EV technology to make it perform and race efficiently. In the article, the author shows how electronic systems of Formula E vehicle play an important role in vehicle movement and stability while running. On the other hand, the vehicle is an environmentalist because it does not use fossil fuel but other forms of green energy. Engineers show significant efforts by designing race cars like Formula E that attain a total speed of 225 kilometers per hour and conserve energy without causing any environmental pollution (Ulrich, 2015).
How the article changes the reader’s perspectives?
Most engineers never realize there is a relationship between engineering and sports until they read Ulrich’s article. The article changes my focus on just designing software and machineries for commercial use into developing efficient software that will be compatible to Formula E race cars to help improve communication and increase the safety of drivers. Additionally, the article changes my focus into engineering computer hardware components to assist Formula E drivers avoid knocking other cars while in the race course.
Influence of the article to the career
The article shows that engineers have a wide variety of choices to choose depending on individual’s interests. Electrical engineers have a challenge because the author claimed Formula E has no system of recharging energy used for fuel conservation process. Students in the Electrical engineering career should team up with colleagues in computer engineering to design systems that will allow recharging in the future.
