Turkle in her essay, “Flight from Conversation” talks about the dwindling one on one conversation among people due to the array of gadgets they carry. Turkle uses a lot of quotations throughout her essay in addition to the points she makes. She adds these quotations to strengthen her ideas and reiterate what she says. Her quotations although direct answers or opinions from different people are generalized in a way; she does not mention any names but rather introduce these people in generalized terms such as ‘a businessman, ‘a 16 year old boy’ and a senior partner in a law firm. Turkle uses this technique to let the reader know that these people are not just individuals but rather represent a group or a type. By withholding the use of specific names, she gains not a few voices to support her thesis or ideas but a group. Using quotations Turkle gives more evidence to her observations letting her readers know that what he has observed aren’t isolated incidents but something that is experienced by common people in their everyday life. As the essay progresses Turkle does not use any direct quotations. She still uses quotations but they are reserved for combined sentiments; she talks for herself and the reader when she uses quotations to talk about sentiments and feelings. This makes the reader accept her ideas more easily. It makes the reader think that it is something that he or he could have easily said at any point in their lives.
Turkle’s essay does not come across as a soliloquy because she uses quotations to punctuate her essay. It is not a boring lecture on her observations alone but an essay on the combined experiences of people whose lives have been taken over by technology to the detriment of personal relations. The quotations also lend credibility to her essay.
