Free Essay About Charles Darwin
Humans are curious beings. There is always a need to know more – to understand more about the world we live in. Scholars, researchers, scientists have long been proven to exert efforts in meaning-making and information dissemination. However, the scientific community will always be in conflict with the Church. Still, the efforts do not dwindle. Prominent scientists have changed the ways of thinking of the primitive society. One of these scientists is Charles Darwin.
Charles Darwin is a British scientist and the Father of Evolution and Natural Selection. Initially, he took up medicine at Edinburgh University, and then studied divinity at Christ’s College in Cambridge (“Charles Darwin”). With the influence from Lyell’s and Malthus’ writings and mentoring from John Stevens Henslow, he embarked on a 5-year expedition around the world aboard the HMS Beagle. He stumbled across the Galapagos Islands and there he observed plant and animal species that are foreign to England. He theorized that the species found in the Galapagos Islands have adapted to their environment; and that existing species may have evolved from ancestor species due to changing conditions. He specifically observed Galapagos finches that are significantly different from English finches (BBC).
Upon his return to England, he partnered with Alfred Russel Wallace and published On the Origin of Species by the Means of Natural Selection (Wyhe). His theory of evolution and natural selection debunked the Church’s theory of Creationism that claims that the world was created by God in a span of 7 days. More controversy sparked upon his declaration that humans may have evolved from apes. Darwin created conflict with the Church, but enlightened society that there is a scientific explanation for the existence of Earth. He paved roads to taxonomy and other modern researches in science and technology such as DNA testing and sequencing. His work became the basis of identifying and caring for the species around the world.
