The humanistic model is a relationship-centered counseling relationship developed on client-centered tradition and it is meant to integrate the primacy of humanizing counseling and relationships that conceives technical expertise and instrumental extension of relationships. This approach will be used to critique and examine the case of Matt, who deserves some kind of attention in dealing with his issues and matters. This approach will seek to get Matt to get the best of everything that he is gifted to do in life through the enhancement and actualization of his potentials within his current situation.

Background Information

Matt is a 47-year old musician who has had major issues in life over the past decade. It appears Matt had a normal life in a well-paid job in his 20s. However, he has had a chaotic life and has gone through two difficult divorces. Matt has approximately 7 children and is in touch with two. He is not in touch of his other children and he has an issue with focus and completion of tasks. He is involved in substance abuse and has been seeking other situations and matters through which he could get a new or better life and he is doing yoga relaxations and other matters. His life is disjointed and he has major problems in relating to other people and completing tasks.
There is the need for him to build a strong life through counseling in order to provide a better lifestyle. This will include the examination of the problems and issues in his life and also work together to get a better lifestyle that will build on the gains and positive sides of Matt.

Description of Present Problem

Basically, Matt has a delusional view of life and has made many mistakes which he is clearly not proud of. Psychologically, Matt’s thoughts are not straightforward and he does not seem to have a good relationship to people. He himself has attempted to take his own life at least on one occasion and he is not able to complete tasks he starts. He has charges pending on criminal offences he has allegedly committed. He is into substance abuse and has hyperactivity and is not really compatible with other members of society in many ways.
He is on a very limited budget and is quite unhappy with his current status. He is on the verge of getting another relationship which is likely to end up disastrously like his other previous relationships. Matt is unstable and inconsistent in social interactions. He looks hyperactive and does not seem to communicate appropriately.

Matt has a mental instability and a general psychological disturbance that is due to his socio-economic and psychological profile and status. This is because Matt does not seem to be stable due to the circumstances around him. It is observable that his younger years were not proper formulated and due to this, he has created a series of habits that are proving to be problematic to his psycho-social profile.
Matt failed to focus on building a strong career and his earning capabilities have been severely unstable. This provides a major basis for him to feel insecure. Matt has also internalized some bad habits including poor relationships and he lacks basic social skills which could include temperament, care and other matters which have proven to be problematic to him.
Thirdly Matt lacks focus and he jumps from task to task. This could be due in part to the restlessness that links to his long history of substance abuse which he has not even identified to be a problem

Intervention

Matt needs counseling that would culminate in numerous specialized activities and processes. Notable amongst them is to gain counseling that will get him to understand that he has a major problem and the problem must be presented in four layers. In the first layer, Matt will have to be told that he has a major problem with substance abuse and this contributes to his hyperactivity and this makes it difficult for him to focus. Thus, there is the need for some kind of therapy or rehabilitation to get him off marijuana and other substances.
The second layer is to get Matt to try to fix his earning capacity. Clearly, Matt does not have enough money to survive and due to the problems with his last divorce, Matt will need money to get back on track with his life. Thus, there is the need for Matt to be encouraged to earn some money and enhance his earning potential.
The third layer of an intervention must get Matt to improve his relationship with some important people in his life. This includes trying to seek audience with his children, his parents and other professional partners that he might have had problems with in the past. This will culminate in the building up of a strong relationship with these people including one or both of his ex-wives. From this attempt, Matt will be able to get a good background and reap a good relationship with people in his life.
Finally, there is the need for the social life of Matt to be repaired. Matt will have to learn important things like cooperating with people and connecting to close friends and relatives. This will include the identification of his problems through counseling and the creation of social and psychological competencies that will allow Matt to become more focused in life and also coordinate and live peacefully with people. This will include amongst other things, getting him to focus and complete tasks that will be carried out at any point in time that he will commence something.
