The present day and age has seen an increase in the dependency of organizations of software to run their operations and processes. The software is essential to not only aid and improve the operations and efficiency of the organization but also to monitors and analyze their performances. However, this has led to the question as to whether the organizations ought to rely on the software service providers for all their needs or use their own and possibly internal systems for their software needs.
When dealing with new software, at first the organization must conduct a thorough examination of their existing infrastructure and weigh whether they are capable supporting the development of their software. The relevance of this emerges when the company has to carry out an expensive process of acquisition of the necessary hardware and personnel to develop and maintain their software. In contrast, they would have at a fraction of the same cost acquired similar or better software and its maintenance from external specialized software providers.
The external software providers are in most cases experienced and competent in the software that they provide to the organization. Consequently, this allows the company to have a well-developed and thoroughly tried and tested software system without incurring all the costs that accompany developing their software. Also, the organization must consider that they may not have the requisite organizational and managerial framework to develop and manage their software. It is as an example moot to have an organization develop its word process program with the availability the present programs for the same purpose.
As such, the company must pay keen attention to its resources and infrastructure at hand before relying on internal software or even developing it. However, over-reliance on the external software service providers also carries its burden including the possibility of the company failing to improve and upgrade the software further or even the company just shutting down. In conclusion, I am of the opinion that it is unnecessary for a corporation to develop its software internally, but the company should and must ensure that the software service providers relied on are reliable.
