The purpose of lobbying is to represent corporate, organizational, group, or individual interests in the government to advocate for special interests ("What Is Lobbying?"). A lobbyist completes many tasks in order to persuade legislators to enact legislation in their favor or vote against legislation not favorable to their interests ("What Is Lobbying?"). Lobbyists research legislation and regulations, attend hearings, and educate officials ("What Is Lobbying?"). They can be paid employees or volunteers, but their goal is to provide information so the government can make informed decisions during the political process ("What Is Lobbying?"). Examples of groups that hire lobbyists include the American Gas Association, the Humane Society of the United States, and the League of Conservation Voters ("What Is Lobbying?"). Each of these groups seeks to ensure legislators are informed about their special interests so that they will do what is in the best interest of the public, as is their job.
A recent example of lobbying involves Trinity Industries, a highway guardrail manufacturer under fire for safety concerns. The company has increased lobbying efforts to fight the concern that in certain instances their guardrails can be deadly (Lipton and Ivory). In February, lobbyists for the company approached several attorneys general at an event to speak about the issue (Lipton and Ivory). Previously, the company began donating to attorney general political causes and to attorney general candidates (Lipton and Ivory). Trinity also sent lobbyists to states across the country to speak with government officials (Lipton and Ivory). The company wants government officials to understand ongoing testing being conducted on its guardrails, especially in the 30 states that have suspended installation (Lipton and Ivory). In this instance, the company is lobbying for its own self interest.
