The film under analysis called “Manito” was created by the producer Eric Eason in 2002. The title of the film corresponds to the name of one of the major characters in the movie. “Manito” is about the life of Mexican people, their surroundings, circumstances and activities which are appropriate for them. The main character of the movie whose name is Junior is an ex-prisoner who is trying to avoid the criminal and illegal life, and Manny is his younger brother who creates problems to his brother; Manito is a diminutive form of the name Manny.
The movie focuses on the Latin-American and Mexica race; people speak mostly Spanish, they know English well though. Thus, it is easy to suppose that they are Mexican people who were born in the United States. And within their communities they communicate in their native languages and use English usually when they talk to Americans.
The movie “Manito” was aimed at creating an instructive and teaching material for the young Mexican-American generation. It should be stated that the movie represents the situations which have their roots in the past: as Mexicans are poorer than Americans, their level of life is lower and alcohol, drugs, prostitutes and crime indexes among the adolescents have usually been higher than that of Americans. When the Mexicans first moved to the United States, they brought all this to the American society. Nowadays, Mexican young people continue such way of life, though there are a lot of progresses among some Mexican-American groups in education, for example. The film shows the scenes where young Mexican-American students of high school talk about alcohol, girls in a dirty way using a prohibited lexicon; Junior takes part in the movie in the episode when he has an unnecessary sexual connection with the house holder of the building they came to paint together with his illegal brigade; all this despite his having a wife and a child.
The whole movie “Manito” is of the instructive character and the end summarizes and clears up the whole idea presented in the movie. The episodes are shown in different ways, though, anyone can track down the main idea of the movie and its character which the producer wanted to bear to the viewer of the movie. The events described in the movie show details of the issue presented, but still there is a succession between them and every such detail makes a contribution to the basic idea which appears in the end of the movie. Thus, it can be said that the movie bears a character of a morality tale for young people, particularly, for Mexican-Americans who have to be very cautious with the seductions which appear on their way.
Any person when creating something, even the thought of mind, unconsciously engages his own origin, age, life situation, childhood, problems and experience. In such a way, the director as the same human being can have a great influence at the plot, development of the events in the movie and tint with which this or that story is told. In this particular case with the movie “Manito” Eric Eason was an American who wanted to picture the life of the Mexicans who lived in the United States. He definitely represented the idea and tint of the story through his imagination and resemblances from the childhood. The situations are told in the movie in a negative way with a low-quality shooting and there is an assumption that all the esthetic effects of the movie have been excluded here in order to convey the real situation and insist on the negative tint of the stories presented.
The international web-site of movies assessment proposes that the rating of “Manito” is 6.9 out of ten possible, which is not low rating as compared to the other films; it can be mentioned that it is rather popular among certain groups of people. Though, I wouldn’t recommend watching the movie “Manito” because, first of all, quality of the shooting was very low, the camera was shaking all the time, there were no music chosen for separate moments and there were no transitions applied between the scenes or situations due to which the coherence is reached. Except for the main idea, the movie has to satisfy esthetic need of a viewer and keep him/her interested till the end which I, as a viewer, didn’t feel at all.
