There are so many negative things that I have experienced. The occurrences would have had different effects if they were handled differently. The events were learning experiences on how some things can be handled without hurting another person emotionally. Appropriate communication skills make all the difference.
Sometimes last year I had gone to a supermarket for shopping. Accidently I placed two pens in my trouser pockets. Since I was shopping for making things I forgot to remove them when I reached the teller. I only paid for the products in the trolley. However, when I was making for the exit, the alarm rang. The supermarket staff come to me and demanded that I produce what I had not paid for in the supermarket.
My problem was not with the directive, but how they had made it. The staff had presumed that I had stolen something from the market. Initially I refused to be searched largely because the staff had been very rude in their address. I believed that there was a better way of addressing me on the issue. One of the supermarket staff had called me a thief. Amore subtle language would be necessary. A forced search revealed the pens.
Another negative experience was with one of my lectures. My work was not properly formatted and had a few spelling errors. The lecturer had told to “stop making silly mistake that could not even be made by a kindergarten child”. I found this offensive and raised the same with my lecturer. The issue resulted into an argument and the lecturer threatened to fail me in the people. I had felt that it was bad for the lecturer not to appreciate the substance of my work. He could have said something like “I think you should correct some of your spelling and formatting” I would have been less offended. The remarks made me get defensive. The remarks hurt my ego. The use of strong remarks that ended up hurting me emotionally was uncalled for in the circumstances. The communication technique adopted by my lecturer was wrong.
Another negative experience was when I took my father car without his permission. I went out with my friends. I knew this was inappropriate but I needed the car. The same day I met my father together with my friends. He reprimanded me in public. Some of my friends were a bit tipsy. My father made harsh remarks towards me and my friends. He had called us useless drunkards. I found the address inappropriate and suggested that we could resolve the matter when we got home. He could hear none of my suggestions. He made me look like a fool before my friends. it forced me to get defensive by saying that the car was a family car even though he is the one who paid for it. This led to further arguments. The events of that day threatened the cordial relationship I had with my father. Things would have been different if he resorted to a less confrontational means of resolving the standoff.
The communication technique used can create a lot of difference in how the receivers of negative information respond. Something bad can be received with ease if the rights words and communication tools are used by the speaker. The hammer and the dynamite approach used by people rarely yield results. The right word choice for each circumstance is necessary in resolving a dispute.
