Privacy is an ethical issue facing many organizations in the world today. Business corporations and organizations collect massive amounts of information and data on individuals as well as other related organizations. They do so for various commercial reasons, including controlling the expense, gaining the market share, enhancing profitability, and increasing the business. The technological advancements have transformed the scope of what type and amount of information can be processed and amassed ("10 ethical issues confronting IT managers - TechRepublic," 2006). This information could be the background data and compensation of employees, their social security numbers, and their account identifiers. This information has to be maintained as well as accessed by the authorized personnel.
However, keeping this information private and secured is challenging, especially when such data leaves the systems and is used. The operational procedures and policies of organizations can address this issue. Organizations constantly share information with each other through the merging of databases with different kinds of identifiers. The questionable ethical question becomes the extent of the role and responsibility expected from all the stewards of this information and data. As such, these individuals with access have to remain honest and appropriate in the handling of the data.
