I. Purpose
The main objective of this activity is to determine what would transpire if a class of lizards were unexpectedly divided into two groups by a hurricane, leading to an isolation of a small group of people on an island remote from the mainland.
II. Introduction
Speciation is the process of evolution by which biological organisms arise (Singh, 2012). The basic essence of evolution determines the presence of two procedures namely anagenesis and cladogenesis (Singh, 2012). A major aspect of argument among speciation biologists is the environmental framework is which it happens. When a group of species are separated geographically, they will deviate from each other in the way they appear and genetically (Safran & Nosil, 2012). These changes may transpire by random chance or by natural selection and lead to reproductive isolation. This concept of speciation of isolated populations is broadly held among biologists as playing a big part in the development of biodiversity (Safran & Nosil, 2012).
III. Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
If a class of lizards is unexpectedly divided into two groups by a hurricane, leading to an isolation of a small group of people on an island remote from the mainland, the lizards will adapt to the changes in their environment.
IV. Methods
In conducting this experiment, a group of lizards were separated into two groups. Five lizards were placed in a natural environment where the temperature is warm. Another five lizards were placed in a cool environment. The lizards’ movements were observed and recorded.
Results/Outcome
The results of the experiment show that lizards, when separated and exposed to different environments, the lizards adapt to the new environment.
Discussion/Analysis
Lizards adapt to the environment where they are exposed. Lizards that are exposed to competitive environments have little food and often develop to smaller sizes. Lizards that are exposed to an environment with full of trees tend to develop strong limbs. Lizards that are exposed to intense heat also adapt to the environment. In addition, lizards have the capacity to camouflage or blend in the environment.
