In an analysis, the author takes one topic, examines it, and conveys this topic to his audience to stimulate discussion. In order to make a complete analysis, the author must thoroughly examine the subject and be well-versed on the topic. Consequently, in order to stimulate a thorough discussion, the author must be able to explain the topic enough that the audience also becomes an expert in the subject.
Every analysis has a purpose. Most people do not write for the sake of writing. There is a goal the author hopes to achieve at the end of writing – making his readers more intelligent on the subject. Asking ‘So what?’ in an analysis “[moves] the observation to implication and ultimately to interpretation[it’s] a way of pressing yourself to confront that essential question, ‘Why does this matter?’ (23). The question allows the subject to go from something to nothing, to give purpose to the discussion of the topic. Repeatedly asking the question ‘So what?’ unravels the story, moving from one statement to the next, from one fact to another. Eventually at the end, the audience will read the conclusion and understand why it was important to read the analysis.
I have often heard children repeatedly ask ‘Why?’ in an attempt to gain knowledge from their parents. During their childhood, they are eager to learn the ways of the world. In the same way, we can ask ‘So what?” to gain more knowledge from another. By constantly asking “So what?” we gather more supplementing details that add to the greater whole of understanding the topic. Asking “So what?” generates a forward momentum, gaining the energy to reach the conclusion.
