Progressive learning is a gradual learning principle that occurs through discovery and experience. It was emanated from progressive education that was established in 19th century developed from traditional education. It has been a movement from 19th century to the current that give emphasis on learning by doing- hands – on projects, experiential and expeditionary learning, social skills, democracy, problem-solving and critical thinking. It also integrates curriculum and entrepreneurship into education. Finally, it assesses children’s projects and productions. Progressive learning for children is concerned with assisting the children to become good people and good learners. Learning is not about just intellectual growth, nor academics narrowed to verbal communication and mathematical proficiencies (Kohn, 2011).
There are several benefits of progress learning for children. First, they become good learners and good people; schooling helps children acquire knowledge of becoming responsible in the society. It not only focuses on the academic merits but also on intellectual growth limited to verbal communication and mathematical proficiencies. Second, children learn with others in a caring community, they gain moral values, as well as academic learning depending on each other. They also practice some kind of competition with one another. It helps them develop a good sense of togetherness (Christou, 2012).
Third, progressive learning improves motivation to the children. It helps assists them in knowing that education is important in their lives. They, therefore, know that it is the only way they will be successful in the future. The children thus get acquainted with motivation that will drive them towards becoming good scholars or furthering their studies (Christou, 2012).
The progressive learning process assists children in active learning. The active learning is achieved through the curricula that are developed in the schools. The curricula are involving, make students formulate questions, create and also seek out answers, get involved in thinking through possibilities among others. Getting help from their teachers, the students actively participate in the learning processes hence developing their intelligence capabilities. The ability to construct ideas is better than just absorbing them (Kohn, 2011).
The children happen to get care and attention required. The children who attend progressive schools are mostly of an age group that requires constant love and attention from whoever is near them. Studies show that the teachers who take care of the children in these schools shower them with the required attention and love. This brings them peace of mind thus concentrating majorly on what they are learning (Kohn, 2011).
Furthermore, progressive learning gives students opportunities to choose whatever they are comfortable in. Such an act improves democracy among them hence preparing them to be good citizens. Good citizens are made in this way and hence help making a good nation. It also assists in developing choices and giving students the ability of choice. They can, therefore, distinguish between good and bad (Kohn, 2011).
The development of progressive schools assists in developing virtues that can be applied in the society and bring benefits. The virtues include instilling a sense to nurture curiosity, compassion, creativity, skepticism among others. Whenever compassionate, creative, skeptic and curious individuals are released to the real world; they will always bring a change. The change will not only be beneficial individually, but universally (Christou, 2012).
In conclusion, progressive learning should be encouraged by most as it has proven to have a lot of benefits. The benefits can be applied in the real world for a better life. There is a need, therefore, for children to undergo it.
