Question 1

Curriculum assessment is necessary because the nursing industry needs nurses who have the necessary qualifications to be successful and professional in the workplace. The aim of a curriculum in any program is to set goals, standards, content, and outcomes. Curriculum assessment is necessary for program assessment because it will evaluate individual performance to see if the individual met the standards and goals set. Curriculum assessment is also important because it evaluates the outcome of a program to see if the program outcome matches the desired outcome of the program (Abedini, Johari, Takhti & Abedini, 2011). However, curriculum assessment is insufficient because there is inadequate time to evaluate the assessment structure. Curriculum assessment is also insufficient because there is inadequate opportunity to conduct observations during the assessment period (Koeijers, Busari & Duits, 2012).

Question 2

Advantages of using external evaluators for a nursing education program include staff morale, educational benefits, and teamwork. Staff morale results from greater satisfaction and improved staff morale because of a high accreditation rank of the external evaluator. Educational benefits arise because nurses will become more knowledgeable and well-trained. Teamwork accrues because of enhancement of interdisciplinary coordination and communication to deal with evaluation requirements. Disadvantages of external evaluators include: workload and costs. Workload results from the creation of extra burden of work for nurses creating stress and anxiety for the nurses. External evaluators may be costly because the external evaluator(s) need payment for their services (Jaafaripooyan, 2014). One of the advantages of internal evaluators includes they are less expensive because you use existing personnel. Internal evaluators can also be integrated into the nursing education program. Some of the disadvantages of internal evaluators are that existing staff may lack evaluation expertise. The staff involved in the evaluation may lack time to conduct thorough evaluation (Cihr-irsc.gc.ca, 2015).

Question 3

One of the programs of assessment is the systems-oriented models. It is a model of program assessment that examines program resources and inputs into the program such as students, administrators and other participants in the programs. The advantages of systems-oriented models include: assessment of processes and operations of the program and the environment within which the program is implemented. Systems-oriented models also examine the outcomes of the program. The disadvantage of system-oriented models is that its implementation is expensive. The resultant programs of system-oriented models may not satisfy the participants of the program (Oermann & Gaberson, 2013).

Question 4

Peer review of teaching in nursing is a means of assessing teaching effectiveness. The value of peer review of teaching is that it has a rewarding and stimulating experience which positively influence staff morale. Peer review of teaching provides guidance for novice teachers, those who lack confidence and those who have poor teaching skills. Peer review of teaching also fosters a culture of reflection, personal growth, self-awareness and development as an educator. Those who oppose peer review of teaching need to learn and understand the values of peer review of teaching and how significant it is in teaching. Those who oppose peer review of teaching should also understand that peer review can be a positive experience if carried out collaboratively and a worthy exercise for the reviewed and the reviewer (Murphy Tighe & Bradshaw, 2013). In some cases, administrators can be more effective than students or peers. For instance, administrators will assess classroom observation, meaning how instructors conduct class and interact with students. Administrator will also carry out a review of teaching materials, which cannot be carried out effectively by either students or peers (Depts.washington.edu, 2015).
