Review
Andrew Anastasios and Andrew Knight partner up to write "The Diviner" the setup and the origin of the story are undoubtedly confusing. The writers claim that Connor is from Australia yet he goes to seek his three sons in Turkey who probably died in Gallipoli. It is believed that the children died in the war; the question is how can let his three sons go to war? If he is healthy enough to go seek them with the main purpose of burying them, he could as well sacrifice himself and let his sons live. Looking at the story from this angle then one can argue that the writers missed the point in telling this story. Another instance that we observe in this story is the claim that Connor moved to Turkey to fulfill his dying wife wish. The question is why did the wife all her sons to go to war and leave her dying. A loving mother cannot let that happen to all her sons. Despite the fact that the First World War was idealistic, and the majority of young men felt to join and fight for what they believed in, loving parents could at least spare some of their children. The dilemma that is seen in the first part of the book is self-inflicted that the dilemma, thus the pain the writers try to show is unreal. The other big question how is Connor being a water diviner helpful as far as searching for his son is concerned. In addition, the pictures that one creates in the mind and the real happenings from narrations are dissimilar, this shows that the writers were to fiction oriented and changed the story. Some of the themes in the story also clash like its post-war when people should be seeking for peace yet is when wrangles between the survivors are not stopping.
Conclusion
"The Diviner" is an exquisite story, however; the writer fails to convince an analytical reader as to why the story should be written. Several situations in the book if critically analyzed one will realize that the author missed the mark. The three dead sons and the grieving parents who allowed them to go to war are not a good story. Connor water divining ability is wasted in this writing, I wonder why they called it the water diviner yet it was a post war seeking mission.
