In the ancient world, men dominated leadership but a few brave women who stood against all odds to become famous leaders. Empress Wu Zetian became the first woman emperor of China while her counterpart Cleopatra became the last great pharaoh of Egypt. The two women were extremely beautiful, charming, and witty. Cleopatra and Wu Zetian rose to become leaders courtesy of their incredible beauty, wit, charm, and courage to stand up against their men folk.
MAIN BODY
Cleopatra and Wu Zetian were extremely beautiful women. Their beauty won them favor in the eyes of the male rulers of their time. Numerous accounts in historical literature records that the two women were very beautiful and artists have painted, sculpted, and drawn them on many occasions.
Both Cleopatra and Wu Zetian were charming and witty. Cleopatra married Julius Caesar so that she could access the military powers that Caesar controlled and by so doing Cleopatra was able to defeat her brother Ptolemy. Wu Zetian (formerly a concubine) also married the son of his master so that she could position herself to become empress.
Whereas Cleopatra was born into a kingship family Wu Zetian schemed her way into the kingship family and eventually became empress. Cleopatra’s father was King Ptolemy XII and she took over leadership at the age of 18 years when her father died. Wu Zetian opted to become a concubine and scheme her way to leadership.
Cleopatra and Wu Zetian involved themselves in a number of controversies in their quest to retain power over their regions. The two women showed some high level of mercilessness and were power hungry. For instance, Cleopatra fought her brother Ptolemy for the Egyptian leadership finally leading to Ptolemy’s death. Wu Zetian was at some point accused of plotting the murder of her children so that she could retain power and continue being the empress of China.
CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH
Wu Zetian and Cleopatra capitalized on their beauty and charm to become famous female leaders in a world dominated by men. The two showed bravery by fighting males opposed to their leadership, married others, and formed great allegiances with the people they ruled. In a world where men still dominate leadership, women who exude the characters of Cleopatra and Wu Zetian still rise to the top and become great leaders.
