The Latinos living in the United States comprise one of the cultural groups that are represented by groups with Spanish origins. About 40 percent of them in the United State are below the age of 18. Majority of the children adapt to new surrounding more easily than adults. However, the children go through difficulties from several pressures. Thus understanding the acculturation practices and troubles is necessary when working with recently relocated children. Useful knowledge includes being familiar with family notions, people-centered life, as well as satisfying personal traits. In this cultural group, the family is the core of their life. For instance, involving the family closely in the education process will help the student and increase the possibility of future success in education among all family members. Majority of students from the Latino cultural group are bilingual. In addition, people from this cultural group appear to have a closer personal space and value physical contact. The most important thing to them is manifestation and group memberships. They may work hard to achieve the goals of a group and work hard for the needs of the community.
Social workers engage with people to offer support during difficult times and make sure that susceptible individuals, who include children and adults, are free from harm. Their task is to offer support to enable service users assist themselves. They keep professional connections with service users and act as guides and sponsors. On certain occasions, they might be forced to use their professional understanding to make hard decisions that might not be received well by all service users. They work in different environments within a structure of relevant legislation and practices, offering support to persons, families and community groups. The environment may include homes, schools, public sector premises, or hospitals. The roles of social workers who specialize in adult services include working with individuals with mental health issues or learning difficulties in suburban care. Working with delinquents by administering them and offering them support in searching for jobs; helping people with HIV/AIDS as well as working with the elderly at home by assisting them to resolve issues with their health, accommodation or remuneration. Social workers who specialize in children or young people services have the roles of offering help and advice to unite families. Working in children’s homes; administering adoption and promote care procedures, offering support to young people who are leaving care or who are in trouble with the law and assisting children who are going through harsh time caused by illness in the family.
Being a social worker involves assisting individuals, families, groups and communities to improve their individual and joint interests. The aim of a social worker is to help individuals develop their skills and their capacity to use their own assets and those of the community to solve issues. The concern of a social worker is with personal, individual as well as wider social problems that include unemployment, domestic violence and poverty. The philosophical foundations of a social work practice include social justice and human rights. Their uniqueness is in the unification of certain values, skills and knowledge, which include the use of relationship as the foundation of all involvements and reverence for the client’s decision and participation. Social workers offer services as a multidisciplinary team members or based on a one to one encounter with the client. Social work involves engaging with clients themselves as well as their families and friends and closely working with other institutions such as the local authority departments, the local police, schools and probation service.
