Pro Debate Paper on College Athletes Being Paid

For many years now, college athletes spend extra time day in and day out for training. Their passion in sports granted them the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and talent especially during Division I. However, the controversy on whether college athletes should be paid or not still continues. This paper argues that college athletes should be paid because they deserve it.
Hartnett (2013) believes that aside from scholarship grants, college athletes should be paid. Hartnett explored the scholarships given to various athletes. According to Hartnett (2013), college athletes receive a scholarship amounting to $25,000 USD every year. However, not all athletes get to stay in the university for the entire college days. Hartnett cited the injuries that athletes are potentially going to experience, the politics involved, and a call informing them that the team no longer needs them. A lot of players in college often obtain a scholarship then go to another school with a better offer. There are athletes who earn money by working. Yet, once the game season starts, they could no longer devote time for working on a job that gives an hourly pay.
Edelman (2014) also suggests payment for college athletes. Edelman (2014) cited that the NCAA is presently producing over $11 billion USD in revenue every year. Such revenue comes from college sports. In the University of Alabama, the revenues that come from games participated by the college athletes amount to $143.3 million USD. Moreover, a lot of the big revenues gathered from college athletes are not actually spent to improve school facilities. Rather, the amount is paid to administrators, coaches, and athletic directors.
Chris Beck, a former collegiate athlete, claims that college athletes are bringing a lot of money to the universities. These players are the ones responsible for the revenues that the administrators and the universities are enjoying. Hence, college athletes deserve to be compensated. College athletes are regular college students, who like other college students, have their needs to meet. These athletes are just like everyone else who wait for their allowance to pay their rent and foods and other expenditures. But college athletes are given certain restrictions. They have their own study halls and practices that happen twice a day. The time they spend outside is also limited. Athletes are given curfews and they do not get to enjoy holiday breaks because they have to prepare for the game if ever they make it to the post-season. Compared to regular students, college athletes are not allowed to earn money on the side. One example of this case was when the Ohio State Buckeyes were banned from participating in the post season games because they were caught selling souvenirs in exchange for some goods.
