My exclusive goal is to apply for a Master’s degree in Construction Management. Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, my first language is Thai. Merely when my parents moved me from Thai Convent School to Shrewsbury International School, I started to learn English properly. Without being surreptitious, to learn another language with English native students was extremely hard since I had the poorest English level. Although my parents objected to the idea of studying abroad, I was enthusiastic to take that big leap of my life. My ultimate decision was to come to the U.S. and take the best out of the U.S. education system.
As a freshman-engineering student, I meticulously struggled to understand professors’ accent. This made me bored and led to a reduced study performance. As much as their accent was bad, the lab classes were extremely rough. When my group got assigned to a task, each of us had to be responsible for a part, and I did not know that one of my group mates was a cheater. Only when we met with the TA, I found out that the whole conclusion part was virtually copied, except for the data we collected. My group automatically got an “F” due to plagiarism. I had to retake that class, and since the incident I started to use plagiarism online service to check my reports.
That was the toughest time for me, and I thought I was the unluckiest person living. Now, when I look back, that issue was normal compared with the rest of experience of my 4 years’ college. I did not like Drexel at all, due to its extremely high crime rate, which made me feel miserable and negative. To work out a solution, I changed from 5 years Mechanical Engineering to 4 years. When I got academic probation, my sole intentions were to pass exams and graduate on time. I did not plan how to boost my GPA. My Spring Quarter 11-12, I took full 20 credits of all the hard classes, despite of my academic advisor’s warning. I took the classes with tears, and, at the end, I failed them and was still on probation. The Summer Quarter 11-12, I took liberal art classes and a few engineering classes. The GPA that term was not high enough to get me out of probation.
I got my first dismissal. The cumulative GPA was 1.99, and I needed an extra 0.01 to get a good standing status. The academic advisor said the committees would to reinstate me if the following term I could get the GPA above 2.3. That meant I had another chance.
During my COOP, I went back home to work at my father’s construction company. Since I was young, my father always brought me to see his clients and suppliers and acquire a valuable experience in client-supplier relationships. My father taught me and trained me in the way he wanted me to be. This was an unpaid job with stretching hours, bad traffics, and I would go home late. Saddest part is he has cancer, the story of which I did not share to anyone. In 2010, the doctor said that my father’s cancer took 95% of the liver area, and he predicted a year maximum, which would be in 2011. I was always stressed since I first knew about his health concern, and it made me panic. When my father stopped the chemotherapy treatment, that day I met his lawyer, who informed me that everything would transfer to me legally. My father fought hard until July, 2013. I thought I would drop out from school, if not my mother who stood beside me during these hard-hitting days and nights.
When I came back to the U.S., I failed one science elective class in my spring quarter 13-14. I finally got my sick leave permission from university and flew back to Thailand to check my health concern. I was sent to the Upenn hospital before with the trouble of kidney stone. I flew back to the U.S. shortly before my final and failed. Therefore, I got the second dismissal and reinstate. This last time, I chose Chemistry as my final and received the grade.
It has been a rough journey for me, from the beginning to the end. Many unmanageable things happened to me that could have broken the toughest man, let alone the women. I could control only some incidents in my life for a limited time, living in another country but my homeland. I am aware of my inexcusable and poor academic performance in the beginning of my lifetime journey, but I fought to the extremes to finish it.
