“Violence in Sports and Among Sportsmen” is an article that talks about the violence that results from sports and to establish the differences between different forms of violence that are exerted by sportsmen as well as those represented within sport areas. The author states that violence in sports involves execution of some kind of behaviors that can cause harm to the others. This often happens out of the rules and regulations that are set aside to govern the sporting activities. Some forms of violence that are likely to be experienced includes insults and cheating. According to Guilert, 2006, such harmful actions are contrary to the rules and regulations that are set forward to be in the sport. They include aggressive behaviors that, not related in any way with the purpose of that particular sport. The author states that violence in sports can occur in a different way. He for this reason formulated several theories to explain different ways through which violence may occur.
Some of the theories suggested by the author that tries to explain the cause of violence in sports includes the biological theory, stating that violence may be inherent human behavior, the psychological theory that holds that dissatisfaction may cause violence, and then the social learning theory that suggests that some violent behaviors may be from another group. The author also went further to explain different ways through which violence can be in sports. He suggested that the coaches as well as the physical educators as the best people who are in a position to control violence in sports through creating positive thoughts in the sports. Guilert, 2006, suggests that the sports need to be in viewpoint in which the coaches are not supposed to highlight the attainment of victory. There should be provision of a positive role model which will encourage players to behave responsibly in sports. Furthermore, coaches should emphasize the need for teamwork and good relationship among players from different teams.
I agree with the author when he points out that some violence can be as a result of learning from the other groups. According to Guilert, 2006, suggests that a player can acquire new behaviors through modeling. The young players always perceive the sports heroes as their role models and, for this reason, they are also likely to imitate their behaviors. When such heroes display some kind of violent behavior in sports, they are also likely to imitate them and, as a result, display such violent behaviors in sporting activities. The author also points out that the major influences in the sports are the coaches. The author is therefore convincing when he claims that some violence can result from social learning from their seniors as well as the coaches.
According to Guilert, 2006, violence can also result from incitation from spectators. Spectators may also cause violence as that cheer their teams. During the game, they perceive their rivals or the opposing team as enemies. This perception of the other opposing team as enemy is likely to promote hostility towards the other group. This hostility might extend to the supporters, the geographical region as well as ethnicities. At the end, it is likely that violence will be witnessed in case the game is so competitive, as no one will not like to lose the game. . For this reason, it can be concluded that the author is well knowledgeable about his subject of discussion.
