Beloved
The story is a beautifully written one with capturing the mind set and actions of the people during the era of slavery. The story of African-American slaves who had to bear the wrongful atrocities of their masters and in the process commits acts of horrible nature to protect their loved ones. The action of Sethe to murder her child was heart rending and people’s response to it will be my topic of discussion.
Although killing your own child is a horrendous crime and cannot be overlooked but sometimes perspective is very important. Sethe commits that act for saving her child from the atrocities that she had to go through. It was a pity killing. The world shunned her for her action including the one person she found solace in, Paul D, as soon as he learns of it. What I hate about this aspect of human nature is that no matter what horrible things people might have committed themselves, they would instantly ostracize others for known crime of theirs. Paul D sleeps with the Beloved impersonator, but in his eyes Sethe is the bad guy.
Another aspect of human nature showed in this book and still visible today is manipulation. Mankind manipulates others to get what they wish for or snatch from others what they already have. The impersonator manipulates Paul D and Sethe to take from them their semblance of a stable life in an upheaval of a world. People will do the same today and the result will be similar. Either they get what they came for, or they will destroy it so that the original owner does not enjoy it as well.
