Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect and designer who was known for his unique furniture designs. According to the article, “Frank Lloyd Wright furniture: A technical study of objects form the Darwin Martin House” the well-known designer preferred Japanese finishes with a minimal finishing of wood (Pamela Kirschner). The article also explained that during his time there was a large amount of “experimentation for finishing techniques and materials known as the Arts and Crafts period” (Kirschner). Frank Lloyd Wright drew inspiration from the simplicity of Japanese style furniture design, which can be seen in the furniture at the Darwin Martin House.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust described that “Wright’s ideology, like that of his international contemporaries, focused on the complete integration of the house – site and structure, interior and exterior, furniture, ornament, every element of design was connected” (web). Wright believed that every element of a house is connected and should work off each other to create a “harmonious and unified interior” (web). Although Wright believed in experimentation, he also believed in using simplicity to design his furniture pieces throughout his years as a designer.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust also described the designer’s “early oak furnishings, characterized by straight lines and rectilinear forms, are designed with the traditional Arts and Crafts preference for solidity and simplicity” (web). Wright drew inspiration from a simple and traditional design to create furniture that is still widely discussed architecture and design today.
