Science and engineering have transformed the world and our lives, almost always for the better. Every year this transformation occurs in an accelerating and outstanding rate. Achievements by human in the field of science and engineering are one of the things that we ought to be very proud of. But the media somehow do not understand it. The people who manage media have background in humanities with very little interest or understanding in the field of science and technology. Only a few worthy individuals have the knowledge on science and technology.
When significant breakthroughs are mad in science, the media reports them in a dull and muddled way. The details and relevant facts are missed while discoveries and findings are misinterpreted o exaggerated. Maybe this is because the media assumes that the audience is stupid. News about science and engineering is accompanied by unrelated library shots of lab coats, centrifuges or even DNA molecules. If one depended on the current media coverage to get information on science and technology, one would think hardly anything in science is happening today. Today’s media is focused on reporting about politics and vices in the society. No one cares about politics.
Lack of enough and detailed coverage of scientific breakthroughs is not only on television but also in radio and print media. Relevant and accurate information about science is only available in science dedicated magazines and television programs. The mainstream media need to start recruiting personnel with scientific knowledge who are capable of effectively reporting about science. It has the responsibility of improving the quantity and quality of coverage on the field of science and engineering. This move would attract young people engage themselves in engineering and science. The world desperately needs scientists and engineers so as to assist in solving real problems in the world.
