It is important to have sufficient punishment regulations available to punish the offenders committing those crimes. Different types of crimes result in different types of punishment, and those who the acts are committed upon should also have an impact on this, as well. One of the reasons for this is that many people, such as the elderly, are less able to defend themselves in particular situations. For example, they may not be as healthy as they were when they were younger. There are many times in which people receive harsher punishments for crimes involving children, and this should apply to those involving those who are older, as well. Because of this, a person committing an act of violence on the elderly should face more severe sentences for assault and battery if that person is over the age of 65.
Florida is a state with many elderly residents, as this is a popular place of retirement in the United States. Observing rules that enforce higher penalties for getting involved with the elderly could make it less likely for people to commit acts of crime against older people. However, if they do decide to follow through with their acts of assault, battery, theft, and other criminal actions, most would agree that these people should receive extra punishment.
Another reason there should be higher penalties for crimes such as assault and battery against the elderly is because of the amount of time it will take them to recover from the incident. For example, if abused, an elderly person could take much longer to recover than a person who is younger and healthier. Also, they may have not been injured as much if they were that old, as well.
