As Aristotle writes “he is happy who lives in accordance with complete virtue and is sufficiently equipped with external goods, not for some chance period but throughout a complete life”. (Nicomachean Ethics, 1101a10).
I am 99 years old man with a great experience behind of me. Now it’s a high time to make a conclusion of my life, to analyze if I have reached my main purpose to be happy or not, how I have spent God’s gift during 99 years. Thanks God for giving me a chance to live long in order to flouring. I’ve seen some people who died at early ages because of accidents or diseases and never had an opportunity to have a happy life. I can say that they were good people but they weren’t happy because they didn’t live a full life. I am the happiest to live a productive long life.
I have lived my life between access and deficiency, it means that I was honest not a lier and never used my honesty as a weapon to hurt others psychologically. Each person has its own virtue, so I’ve never tried to copy others’ action because I understand the thing that is good for someone is not ok for me. I’ve lived my own life and been by my own. I am proud of myself for not wasting my life to live others’ life. I’ve kept my soul active in accordance with virtue and gained a practical wisdom by using my education and always been a part of society. I tried to be an ethical man because right things can be done only by right mannered person. Seeing the results of my right actions made me one of the happiest people in the world because they benefited people around me and I didn’t damage others.
I can surely say that I had a complete friendship. I am happy because my wife is my complete friend, my children are my complete friends and my best friend is my complete friend. They are with me at every stage of my life; when I am successful and when I fall dawn. Moreover I have had an external good fortune and right political conditions to flourish since it is necessary condition for happiness according to Aristotle’s concept of eudemonia.
Of course I had challenges and hard times in family and relationships, at work and I was lost for a while but I managed them. At those moments I asked myself – Is a zoo with protection and food best to flourish for a lion or a savanna where he has to fight for living? – My chose always was a savanna and I got motivation imagining myself as a lion in my savanna so I was a king of my life and my goal to be happy. All things have been done for a reason to be happy. Not fame, not wealth, not pleasure, not success made me happy. Happiness is above all of them. Happiness is a sustained form of life, it is not easy to lose and it is not subjective.
In conclusion I want to say that I practiced eudemonia because I lived with arête trying to fill the gap between my capable doing and actual doing from moment to moment.
