In a number of cases, the integrity of police investigations has been put into question. One aspect that has raised more concern entails the police relying on paid informants for their investigations. This issue addresses both ethical and legal dilemmas. This has a number of pros and cons. On the positive, the police will be able to collect every detail required to file a successful case against the suspect. As a matter of fact, paid informants take their time to carry out secret activities that can help the police come up with conclusive evidence. This means that the police will already have enough evidence when carrying out the arrest, saving them money and time.
Despite the above advantage, there are several cons associated with making use of paid informants. In a number of cases, police have worked on wrong tips from the paid informants. This is against the concept of fair trial. In the United States of America, paid informants often commit crimes in the name of working for the government. At other times, the so-called informants turn out to be the victims or perpetrators, hence hindering the cause of justice for their own good. This puts the practice in an awkward position.
My friend, Peter has had an experience of the police code of silence which ended up influencing the situation he was in. In his case, he voluntarily refused to disclose certain information about the type of relationship he enjoyed with the deceased. Because of this, the police harassed him and harmed him, the effect of which coerced him to provide the information. This is against the spirit of justice. Such codes of silence in police departments instill fear to the public, making it uneasy for the public to be open and say the truth. In essence, such loyalty is not beneficial and necessary because it works against the public. This might create bad blood between the police and the public.
