Through the current age of machinery and technological innovations, our reservations regarding the environmental issues that we may be setting into motion are taking the spotlight, and in the same context, Green Computing is a new technique of Environmental preservation that we are trying to make possible. In this paper, we are going to comprehend the ideas behind Green computing and how it works, and whether or not this new environmental technique is actually deriving results.
‘Green Computing’ is commonly explained as the technique of manufacturing, designing, using and disposing of off computers in such a way so as to shrink the impact that they may have on the environment. The effort may seem futile to us at our household level because of modest use of computers and therefore almost insignificant impact; but the harm, that these computers have been doing in workplaces, is far from trivial and therefore demands our attention.
We can employ a number of different ways of practicing green computing some of which are enumerated in the following few sentences. The first technique is the ‘Green Use’ of computers. This technique calls for the use of machines in a manner that decreases the consumption of electricity. One way of doing this would be to switch our computers to power saver modes and to avoid leaving them on standby over extended periods. ‘Green disposal’ is another such technique which provides for the proper recycling of equipment after it has run the course of its life. To do so would rid us of the added pollution that the computers contribute to our environment. ‘Green Design’ could also help reduce the stress on the environment by incorporating in the machinery designs an element of efficiency so that they burn through the minimum possible of our resources. ‘Green Manufacturing’ is yet another policy which stresses the importance of minimizing the waste products when engaging in the manufacturing of computers.
The question that arises here is whether or not this technique really realizes results. Green Electronics Council (GEC) published a report during 2007 which presented evidence of these efforts actually offering results. According to GEC, the first six-month sales of environmental friendly computers have successfully saved 13.7 billion kWh of electricity and prevented 56.5 million metric tons of air pollution of which, 1.07 million metric tons composed of Greenhouse gases. The manufacture of these computers in addition to everything else also saved us from disposal of 41,100 metric tons of harmful waste.
The efforts, we have been making by far, have been proving effective, and this is the reason why we should keep our efforts at saving the environment and in the meantime, come up with even more effective and efficient techniques.
