Human, as a living being, has been evolving throughout decades has increased it demand in different resources. Starting from simple demand like food and ending up with water. Our planet will never stop moving, and human population will never stop growing. As we know, Earth counts over 9 billion people all over the world. This may cause a real disaster to make and bring food to each of them. Population increase and consumption growth explains, that the global demand for food will increase for at least another 40 years. Land, water, and energy competitions will dramatically reduce human ability to produce food. The impact of the food system on the environment is another urgent requirement, which needs to be paid attention at. Global warming and other climate change is another serious threat. But everything is not that bad, statistics show, that the world we live in is able to produce more food, and we can make a conclusion, that we can ensure that the food is used more efficiently and equitably. To establish this goal, we have to come up with multifaceted and linked global strategies, which the main focus will be the challenge of feeding 9 billion people. We are going to discuss some of the major ideas.
During past half-century, food production has been increased dramatically lowering the rates of the hungry people all over the world. Nevertheless, more than one in seven people today still do not have access to sufficient protein and energy from their diet, and even more suffer from some form of micronutrient malnourishment (FAO, 2009b). As our population continue to grow, the wealth of the people continue to grow and at the same time with the higher demands and ability to purchase comes higher food consumption. A greater demand on dairy products and fish adds a sufficient pressure on a food system. Everything would be okay, but food producers are having a hard time with huge rivalry for land and water. From my point of view, overthrowing this problems may affect food system positively. The good advice here for the wealthy people would be keeping their diet and not overeat, as it may grow to serious problem like obesity. Having greater water control with a severe climate will increase the food production little bit, which also can increase food production statistics.
Rapidly changing demand for food brings another serious threefold challenge. People which live in deserts and have rough climate, are facing troubles in food consumption. To ensure the world poorest people and make sure that they are not hungry, we have to find ways for this that are environmentally and socially sustainable. To do so, we have to change the way this food is produced, stored, proceeded and accessed. Nowadays, we can assume that food prices are index, which shows how the availability of food changes for those who have access to world markets and can afford it. It is good to realize, that during past century the gross of food prices have generally fallen. It shows, that humanity is available to produce the amounts of food needed to feed everybody. However in 2008, there was unexpected rapid rise in food prices and the cause is still being argued about. Many scientist say, that this was result of a new demand coming from well-developed countries, as well as biofuel production competition. Yes, increased food prices will result new and great investments in food market production, but the dark side of it, is that government and other investors will want to encourage food producers to produce more amount of food for the same amount of needs. Literally saying to do the impossible thing, because food production of traditional staple sources remain keep staple, rather than raising the line with the population explosion.
So, the question of how more can be produced sustainably comes to the first place. As we know from the past, food shortages used more land for agriculture and exploited new stockings. By doing this grain agriculture production doubled, but the land for agriculture has been increased only by 9%. Even more land can be brought to agriculture, but other human being activities does not allow that, as it needs more costly solution to solve this problem. Urbanization and other human uses made the land bad for food production. The good advice here would be obtaining new skills, which will be able to combine food production and other human activities together. Moreover fishing grounds are overexploited, and making a small ecosystem like lake have a chance to create a new possibility for crop and fish production.
