Movie: The Help
In the novel Johnny Foote discovers Minny’s employment much earlier than in its screen version. The reason is that the movie includes some changes in the plot. The relationship between Johnny’s wife and Minny are not so complicated as it is in the book. Moreover, the movie doesn’t reveal the issue about Celia’s miscarriages and in the end Celia learns to cook due to Minny’s lessons. The movie shows Minny as a sympathetic character who helps Celia to overcome her problems and Johnny does not get angry with revealing Minny’s employment. It is some sort of happy ending and that’s why this moment was delayed in the movie (Steinbach).
The fact that the movie and the novel are quite different media has a huge influence on the way of telling the plot. It is obvious that the movie has a limited time frame and that’s why some changes are made and some facts are omitted. That’s why these factors affect telling of the plot in a great way (Steinbach).
As we know, movies, which are based on books, are always different from the books themselves. The Help is one of the examples. The decisions regarding the plot were made because the director also wanted to present his own point of view and these changes tell us about his own personal beliefs and motives (Steinbach). Moreover, to my mind, the decisions about changing some facts and details were made in order to make the movie more PG-friendly. The violence was smoothed over and it helped to capture bigger audience, which also affected movie’s box office (Little Eva).
