Reflection

Working with a team can be categorized as a transformative process for the individuals in the group. This is because it helps the team members to work towards a common goal. In which case, the group sets a common goal, whereby each of the members contributes to establishing strategies. I became aware about this idea of working in a team when we established team, which ended up with presentation of the achieved results in 45 minutes. This was essential in accessing my ability to work in a group. In which case, each member contributed ideas and we could evaluate each idea to reach to a sustainable conclusion. The process also involved a test of courage since it involved standing in front of an audience. As the result, this report presents my experience about working in a team, presenting my strengths and weakness and what I plan to incorporate to improve my situation.

Description

The exercise involved working in a group, with the same goal. The process involved supporting each other towards achieving a common aim. Each member was delegated to work on a given function of the group; thereby making it easier to achieve the goals of project. The delegation involves placing each member on the section of his or her expertise. The results from the group were important for each team member because it determined the success of working in the group. In the process of making a decision in the group, every individual was supposed to raise ideas concerning the best way of driving the group towards success of the project. Each member’s idea was taken and then the group was to scrutinize each to come up a hybridized version, agreed upon by each member (Herrmann, 2015). The ability of the team to come up with a harmonized solution agreed upon by each individual determined whether the group was to move forward or not. Intuitively, every member’s idea was taken as of much importance because this could help in achieving group synergy. During decision-making process, the representation of the members was taken to be equal; with every individual having a part to play. This was a way of ensuring that every team member was involved in achieving the goal of the project (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013).
The major goals of the each individual in the team were to deliver the work on time. Every individual had the commitment of ensuring that he or she achieved a timely delivery to ensure team’s efficiency. Above that, every member was charged with the responsibility of cooperating with each other and ensuring that every member received support whenever they were lagging behind (West, 2010).

Evaluating my strengths and weakness;

In the group, I was able to put my strengths in practice to make the required progress. The first strength I applied in the project is urgency. When carrying out the project, I was able to deliver my work on time as required by the team. Due to the recent advancements, individual strengths play a pivotal role in completion of the organizational tasks. Self-assessment is important because it enables a person to realize their strength and weaknesses (Anandarajan et al, 2006). Work was delegated to everybody in the group towards the completion of the project. Delegation helped in the timely completion of the projects and tasks that the group had. A person is able to realize their full potential when work is delegated to them as per their strengths.
On the other hand, I was committed to the work given. Commitment is important because it shows the individual strengths and weaknesses and gives a direction for work (Sims, 2007). A committed workforce will work towards the achievement of a common goal. Our project as a team involves meeting all the requirements that pertains to the established goals. Having a team whose needs and preferences are met will lead to completion of the tasks on time (Lawler & Thye, 2006). Motivated people in the project will lead to achievement of the duties that are required in the project. Besides, I was self-motivated in the work I did to the group. I did it willfully and as per the requirements of the human resource department.
Even though I showed a strong personality in teamwork, there were some instance that I encountered drawbacks in fully integrating with the team. These instances were projected in form of my weaknesses. One of my weaknesses is that I was so adamant and not ready to change my ideas whenever they conflicted with that of the group. I considered my ideas as perfect, even when the other member’s ideas seemed better than what I presented. This made me to run in opposite direction with the team, whenever we had an instance of non-similar ideas. During this points, I was not able to follow the task well just because I was not ready to leave my idea and follow the other’s ideas. As the result, I was not able to contribute to the group effectively during these times. This affected me and in accordance to this, Lussier (2015) asserts that inability to be coherent with the ideas of the group is likely to affect the productivity therein. The negative attitudes cost the team a lot because not all the tasks in the project were completed on time as required (Gottfried & Reese, 2004).

About the experience

I can associate my presence in the group as a form of transformative learning process. This is because it involved a more or less of a team process where the individuals assist and depend on each other with the main aim of complementing on their effort to achieve the goals. I consider working in a team very essential, as it was promising to help us in ensuring that we achieve our goals since each member acts as a brother’s keeper (Dunin-Kȩplicz & Verbrugge, 2010). We were able to form a better subject for illustrating on the values of the exercise since we were able to establish team-building skills, which will help in future.
Working in group helped me with many values, which makes it acceptable to work towards achieving success. The values of the process arise from its interactive nature, which allows the students to assist and depend on each other (Holman, 2003). First, the transformative process allows individual to establish and share goals. This arises because the group members came together to understand each other’s view and integrate the views into developing the goals (Hodgkinson & Starbuck, 2007). The integration of the views allowed the individual to participate towards the achievement of the values since they contributed towards the formation of the goals. Further, the integration of the views allowed for the formation of perfect and achievable goals, which restrict the members towards working within their scope. Consequently, this increased the productivity of each individual in the group. Sharing the goals was also important for students as they supported each other ensuring that no one is stuck on the way (Zaraté et al, 2007). Another value is that the process also contributed to the understanding of the existing problem. Achievement of success always involves identification and understanding of a problem, which will form the basis for the group efforts (Levin, 2005). The transformative process helped us in getting insight and providing solutions to the problems thereby supportive in their way to success. The interactive process allowed us to raise different solutions of which we had to integrate to produce the best possible solution (Dyer et al, 2013).

Conclusion;

In conclusion, the exercise shows that understanding strengths and weaknesses are important in the execution of a team project. A team should be composed of people who understand their capabilities so that they get the best out of what the team has. In the project, my strengths enabled me to marshal up the team so that we produced what is required in a project. A project has phases that should be delegated to different teams so that they work towards the completion of the tasks. Moreover, a project requires teamwork and commitment. A committed team is able to work in line with the set standards so that the goals are achieved in the project. The deliverables at each phase of the project can only be achieved when all team members do the work that is required of them. I The project has influenced greatly on me as far teamwork is concerned. In future, I will address issues that pertain to my weaknesses and attitudes towards work by ensuring that I am ready to welcome other people’s idea whenever they are better than mine.
