Films are forms of expressions that mirror the creativity of an individual or a director. In this paper, we compare the film styles of Jarmusch and Bergman. In exploring this topic, this paper presents how each film appear visually, the devices used by the directors, and how existentialism is presented.
Bergman’s film is described as mature and provocative because it engages the audience into intimate scenes that tend to open up uncomfortable feelings (Ford, “Ingmar Bergman”). Bergman’s work usually involves extreme focus of the actors’ face. The images have the capacity to produce emotions of complex subjectivity. Sufferings and desires ruled the lives of the characters. In addition, sex was constantly part of the characters in the movies, a way to overcome the feeling of isolation and seeking connections with others (Bernstein, “Swedish Director Probed”). On the other hand, Jarmusch’s film styles are focused on detailing the ordinary events that a lot of people often take for granted (Lafrance, “Jim Jarmusch”). Jarmusch shows in his films that these mundane events are filled with captivating moments (Lafrance, “Jim Jarmusch”). Moreover, Jarmusch’s films make use of characters who appear to have no sense of direction and who are often up for adventures (Lafrance, “Jim Jarmusch”).
Existentialism was also presented in both films. The basic premise of existentialism is centered on the idea that people are presented with various choices and people have the freedom to choose and thus become accountable for their own actions and choices. In Jarmusch’s films, since the characters are always after of adventures and seem to live in the moment, existentialism suggests that these characters have the choice how to deal with their everyday life. In Bergman’s films, the characters are also given the freedom to choose whether to shift their outlooks and let go of their sufferings, or feel the way they feel at the moment.
