Synopsis of Executive Summary

The key purpose of this dissertation is to help find an alternative or solution to testing products on animals. This practice of animal testing has been affecting not only harming the animals and in some cases killing them, but also in some cases harming humans because animals and humans body structures are not the same, which will lead to different reactions towards the products. Hope Company has suggested a set of alternatives for testing products on animals such as testing on tissue and volunteers’ human blood. We have detailed how these options can be more efficient and ethical than testing on animals. We also mentioned the cost of each, stating that these alternatives will cost money, but the benefits gained after that is certainly worth it.

Introduction

Animal testing is an important part of a current crisis. Animal testing is causing many deaths of animals because of the testing of products companies use on them. Taking the lives of these poor animals may cause extinction to the specific species on which they test. It is more beneficial for the companies to use the solutions we came up with, to stop this disaster that is happening and also the solutions are easier to test on. One of the solutions is testing on human tissues which would help to see the accurate results of the product testing and would also show if the product is useful or not. Moreover, in the body the solutions will be explained accurately and how the companies can use these solutions other than testing on animals.

Body

Problems:
One of the most common problems that we face nowadays is animals testing. Animals testing defined as experimentation carried on animals, and it assesses the safety and effectiveness of everything from medication to cosmetics. “Estimates calculate that approximately one hundred million animals are used each year for animal testing purposes.” So, animal testing is something that happens in a very high rate annually, and it is considered as a problem because of many reasons. First of all, it is unethical to do so, because animals have a right to live without suffering just like humans. Also, it is not ethical to assert our dominance over another species. The second reason why testing on animals should be illegal is that it is not efficient enough because animals and humans do not have similar cells’ installation. Statistics show that less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals, and over 98% never affect animals. There is another statistic says that “70% of drugs which cause human birth defects are safe in pregnant monkeys.” which means that what we apply for humans cannot be applied to animals, and vice versa. For example, the two most common illnesses in the western world are lung cancer from smoking and heart disease. Neither can be reproduced in lab animals. The third reason is that there are many alternative testing technologies in existence, which means that there are many humane alternatives in the world nowadays and they are more accurate as technology improves. To illustrate, “Among the hundreds of techniques available instead of animal experiments, cell culture toxicology methods give accuracy rates of 80-85% ” The fourth reason is animal testing is not just harmful to the animals, but to humans as well, the reason behind that is the unreliable results that the animal testing produce. For example, each year there are 2.1 million Americans are hospitalized by medical treatment, and that means humans are getting sick as a result of doing tests on animals. Lastly, continuing on the same track means we are – as a society – moving backward, not forward.

Benefits of Implementation:

There are so many benefits of the alternatives we are providing to testing products on animals. First of all, the results we will get are more efficient than the results gotten from testing on animals, which will lead to not harming any humans. Secondly, no animals will be harmed or killed because of testing on them. So by using the alternatives, we will get more efficient results in more ethical ways and not harm any animals or humans in the process of testing new products.

Solutions for Animal Testing

Some alternative testing methods are as follows:
Using blood from human volunteers:
Pyrogen tests become the cause of killing of thousands of rabbits each year. Human blood can be purchased from blood banks or from volunteers willing to sell their blood for compensation. Taking human blood is ethical because the body naturally replaces the lost blood and the scientists/researchers do not have to kill animals or violate animal rights. Human blood is suitable for detecting fever-inducing contaminants in the intravenous medicines.

Using EpiSkin™, EpiDerm™ and SkinEthic:

They comprise artificial human skin, so their use can eliminate the need to kill animals for irritation and skin corrosion tests. Drugs, cosmetics, chemicals, and other consumer products are tested by pumping substances into the organs of living animals or by dripping chemicals into their shaved or raw skin or eyes (Frison). These tests can be replaced by cell-based in vitro toxicity screening performed in test tubes.
The Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Test and Isolated Chicken Eye Test These tests are wonderful examples of substituting live-animal testing with dead-animal testing. Organs of dead animals can be put to good use by testing rather than killing live animals. In order to detect chemicals and irritants to the eyes, these tests use eyes taken from animals that have been slaughtered for the meat industry.

The 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Test (NRUPT)

This test can be used to avoid killing mice and other animals in medicinal testing for their tendency to cause photo-toxicity. 3T3 NRU PT serves as a substitute in vitro technique for the in vivo phototoxicity assay and delivers the benefits of cost efficiency, simplicity of operation, high correlation with the results derived from in vivo phototoxicity assay and good reproducibility (Yanga et al. 517).

Organs-on-chips

Harvard’s Wyss Institute has developed “organs-on-chips” comprising the cells of humans cultivated in a way that mimics the function as well as structure of human organs and their systems (“Alternatives to Animal”). Organs-on-chips are suitable for use in drug testing, toxicity testing, and disease research and can obviate the use of animals for such tests.

Discussion

Animal-based testing methods are a violation of animal rights and are immoral and unethical. After being tested, animals are killed either by decapitation, neck-breaking, or asphyxiation without even being provided with pain relief. To make it worse, a large percentage of animals used for testing in the US are not even counted in the official statistics, and accordingly, the Animal Welfare Act does not provide them with any protection (Vartan).
Non-animal test methods are not only recommendable because they do not cause harm to animals and when used, save the lives of thousands of animals that are subjected to violent, brutal, and cruel tests otherwise; but also because non-animal test methods bring more accurate results and are quicker and more cost effective compared to tests upon animals. Results produced by non-animal test methods are unbiased and more reliable because they are not influenced by differences in the species and other genetic factors that traditionally affect the outcomes in tests conducted on animals. Many industries have already started to endorse non-animal test methods successfully without having the quality or quantity of tests affected (Frison).
