My experience as an intern at the Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Service (IRIS) was quite interesting and motivational. This is due to the treatment that I received despite my working conditions. Throughout my work at the organization, I worked for free. This is because intern at the organization work for free since we worked to gain experience that would determine whether we had the right skill for what we had acquired. Despite the little experience that I had in my area of expertise, I received good treatment where I felt that I was an equal member of the working force in the organization. This is due to the treatment that I received where I felt that I was an official member at the organization. My motivation came from my seniors; this is because the appreciated the work that I did in the organization. I also had the required education that made me maximize on the input that I put into the company. The output that I got from my employers was quite admiring; this is because they created a comfortable working environment for me where I was able to put all my experience to the limit. Through this, I was able to ensure that all the work I did was up to a professional level. This is because I had all the relevant materials that were required in making sure that I deliver quality results. Given these factors, it was inevitable for me not to provide the required expectations to my employers.
Concerns from different departments such as from the director where he would enquire whether I was comfortable made me feel appreciated. This is because I value recognition and motivation, being an unpaid intern, this was my only source of motivation. Though what I gathered, my employers were quite aware of the relevance of motivating and recognizing all employees despite their status in the organization. This was done to ensure that the best results were acquired from all the relevant departments in the organization. My supervisor was also quite resourceful, this is in instances where she would applause me for anything that I did, and she liked. It is through such appreciation that I was able to effectively perform the diverse duties that I was allocated with. Their need for encouragement was because my work was evidently not going to be motivated through payment. Therefore, it was required of them to ensure that I was appreciated. This could only be established through accordingly applauding me for the endless that I put to my work to ensure that there was proper and adequate service delivery.
Other employees within the organization were also a source of motivation to me. This is because they would invite me for lunch often where they would ask me certain questions that would be relevant in solving client needs. Through such instances, I would feel that my services were required in the company. This is because as an intern I believed in myself despite having little experience in this field of work. My confidence came from the knowledge that I had acquired through proper and adequate studying. I also constantly offered assistance to clients that my workmates could not assist. This is because each worker has a unique expertise and knowledge but at times may fail to meet the diverse client’s needs. It is through such experiences that I felt appreciated by my coworkers.
