Essay scoring reliability relates in examining the inter-rating reliability of grades by the tutors of nursing in rating the term papers of their students. While testing the differences among the student’s essay papers, and to understand the level of expertise, a three-way analysis of variance is performed. The first is a short essay examination question that tests the ability of the student in providing knowledge and content under restricted time limit, the second one is an essay paper known as term paper assignment, that give the students to reach better knowledge and achieve a feeling of expertise in a particular area. The third one is modified essay question based on factual case history, used to asses skills in clinical area since this require students to integrate data from the patient’s history and clinical examinations and formulate a treatment and management plan .
Difference between analytical and holistic scoring
Holistic scoring gives the students an in general assessment score for the paper as a whole, the readers does not allocate a score for each criterion in holistic scoring. They try to balance the potency and weak points among the various criteria to attain an overall assessment .
Analytical scoring ensures students with at least a scoring rate for each criterion and offer teachers to give some feedback on each criterion
Strategies to improve reliability of scoring
Inter-rater reliability is a measure of accord between two raters or observers. This reliability is useful if the subject matter is highly subjective. If the rating scale is constant, Pearson’s product moment correlation is applicable; if the scale is ordinal then Spearman’s coefficient and for clear-cut classification, Cohen’s Kappa coefficient is ideal .
